Problem Solution

SoM's buttons appear misaligned with the background Install the 'MS Gothic' font. SoM requires 'MS Gothic' which is a font that contains both Japanese and English letters. If your PC doesn't have this font, a substitute font is used which causes controls to resize and become misaligned. MS Gothic is on the Windows CD; to install it open the Control Panel. Open 'Regional and Language Options'. On the 'Languages' tab mark 'Install files for East Asian Languages.'

SoM sometimes crashes in the Map Editor section Temporarily disable your video card's hardware acceleration. The 3D preview for map pieces doesn't play nice with some modern hardware acceleration. Go to 'Start > Run'. Type in 'dxdiag' (without the quotes). 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' will open. On the 'Display' tab, push the 'Disable' button to the right of 'Direct3D Acceleration'. Re-enable it when you're done using SoM.

The 3D previews in the Parameter Editor look dark and hard to see. Temporarily disable your video card's hardware acceleration. Caused by the same issue as crashing in Map Editor. To fix go to 'Start > Run'. Type in 'dxdiag' (without the quotes). 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' will open. On the 'Display' tab, push the 'Disable' button to the right of 'Direct3D Acceleration'. Re-enable it when you're done using SoM.

In some places there are strange symbols or squiggles where text should be. Configure Windows to support Japanese non-unicode text. Japanese has thousands of characters that the rest of the world doesn't usually use. To make room for all these characters, they use a different text coding called Shift-JIS. SoM uses this Shift-JIS encoding. I replaced most Shift-JIS unique characters with English equivalents when I did the translation but, there were a few symbols (such as the 'does not equal' symbol) which are not in the English character set. If your Windows isn't configure to support Shift-JIS, these Shift-JIS characters will display as squiggles. Go to Control Panel and open Regional and Language Options. On the 'Language' tab check 'Install Files for East Asian Languages'. Then, on the Advanced tab under 'Language for non-Unicode programs', select 'Japanese' from the drop down menu.
